KUIRFEST Berlin

Pembe Hayat KuirFest (Pink Life QueerFest), the first and only queer film festival in Turkey, is visiting Berlin in collaboration with bi’bak. KuirFest Berlin presents you a film and discussion series that engages with migration and mobility issues exclusively from non-Western queer perspectives. It gathers shorts, documentaries, fictions and series that explore different ways of commenting on hegemonic border politics and their encounters with body, sexuality and gender. The selection aims not only to tell a wide range of stories on queer migrants, border-crossings and liminalities of bodies, but also invites the audience to think collectively about how to queer narratives of migration and body politics...

Morbid Fascinations: Zagreb's Mirogoj Cemetery as a Site of Leisure, Memory, and Amnesia
Lecture by Jeremy Walton (Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity, Göttingen) as part of the Urban Studies Seminar
Perched on the forested slopes of Medveščak Mountain, Zagreb’s Mirogoj Cemetery, designed by eminent Franco-German architect Hermann Bollé and first opened in 1876, is arguably the crown jewel in the city’s Habsburg architectural heritage. Mirogoj’s elegant arcades and oxidized copper-plate domes feature prominently in tourist-oriented literature about the city, and a trip to the cemetery is a standard feature on many Zagreb tours. This presentation explores the intersections and tensions between Mirogoj as a site of leisure and as a site of memory. It will start with situating the cemetery against the backdrop of the broader appreciation, revaluation, and commodification of Zagreb’s Habsburg built environment and legacy in recent years...

Deciphering Moroccan 'Cool': Urban Youth, Rap, and the Politics of Resistance
Lecture by Cristina Moreno Almeida (King's College London) as part of the Urban Studies Seminar
A new young king, the proliferation of music festivals promoting contemporary genres and the 2003 Casablanca terrorist attacks frame the irruption of rap music into mainstream Moroccan media at the beginning of the 2000s. Rap as the new ‘cool’ found itself in a privileged position favoured by a state and urban elites who imagined rappers and hip hop culture as ambassadors of a modern, moderate and liberal ‘new’ Morocco. Based on the findings of her book Rap Beyond Resistance: Staging Power in Contemporary Morocco, Cristina Moreno Almeida attempts to shed a light on this vibrant and varied rap scene diverse in its political discourses, and its relationship with the country’s elites...

The "Arab Spring" has especially had repercussions for young people: they face major political and social challenges and, frequently, an uncertain future. Religion als Reform. Islāh und Gesellschaft in Marokko, 1830-1912

Am Beispiel von islāh liefert die Studie einen Beitrag zur Erforschung von islamischen Reformtraditionen in Marokko. Die Untersuchung folgt einem textorientierten, historisierenden Zugang, der Religions- und Rechtsgelehrsamkeit als Teil sozialer und politischer Verhältnisse versteht. Das Spektrum der überlieferten Ausdrucksformen von islāh reicht von der Unterweisung in dogmatischen und rituellen Fragen bis zur Durchsetzung von Ruhe und Ordnung auch unter Einsatz von Gewalt. Alle verbinden in unterschiedlicher Weise das Anliegen der Rückkehr zu den Quellen mit fortwährender Erneuerung der moralischen Ordnung des Gemeinwesens und individueller Ermahnung. Die Aufschlüsselung der unterschiedlichen Deutungen von islāh liefert zugleich neue Erkenntnisse über Prozesse der Herstellung und Aushandlung gruppen-übergreifender Zugehörigkeit und politischer Legitimität im Übergang von vorkolonialen zu kolonialen Formen der Staatlichkeit in Marokko. | |
