Pembe Hayat KuirFest (Pink Life QueerFest), the first and only queer film festival in Turkey, is visiting Berlin in collaboration with bi’bak. It gathers shorts, documentaries, fictions and series that explore different ways of commenting on hegemonic border politics and their encounters with body, sexuality and gender. The selection aims not only to tell a wide range of stories on queer migrants, border-crossings and liminalities of bodies, but also invites the audience to think collectively about how to queer narratives of migration and body politics...

Monday, 11 June 2018, 5 pm, ZMO Morbid Fascinations: Zagreb's Mirogoj Cemetery as a Site of Leisure, Memory, and Amnesia Lecture by Jeremy Walton (Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity, Göttingen) as part of the Urban Studies Seminar
Perched on the forested slopes of Medveščak Mountain, Zagreb’s Mirogoj Cemetery, designed by eminent Franco-German architect Hermann Bollé and first opened in 1876, is arguably the crown jewel in the city’s Habsburg architectural heritage. Mirogoj’s elegant arcades and oxidized copper-plate domes feature prominently in tourist-oriented literature about the city, and a trip to the cemetery is a standard feature on many Zagreb tours. This presentation explores the intersections and tensions between Mirogoj as a site of leisure and as a site of memory. It will start with situating the cemetery against the backdrop of the broader appreciation, revaluation, and commodification of Zagreb’s Habsburg built environment and legacy in recent years...

Monday, 18 June 2018, 5 pm, ZMO Deciphering Moroccan 'Cool': Urban Youth, Rap, and the Politics of Resistance Lecture by Cristina Moreno Almeida (King's College London) as part of the Urban Studies Seminar
A new young king, the proliferation of music festivals promoting contemporary genres and the 2003 Casablanca terrorist attacks frame the irruption of rap music into mainstream Moroccan media at the beginning of the 2000s. Rap as the new ‘cool’ found itself in a privileged position favoured by a state and urban elites who imagined rappers and hip hop culture as ambassadors of a modern, moderate and liberal ‘new’ Morocco. Based on the findings of her book Rap Beyond Resistance: Staging Power in Contemporary Morocco, Cristina Moreno Almeida attempts to shed a light on this vibrant and varied rap scene diverse in its political discourses, and its relationship with the country’s elites...

10785 Berlin Middle East and North Africa: Youth and politics in the wake of the "Facebook-Revolution" Fishbowl discussion with ZMO vice director Sonja Hegasy as part of the FES WEEK OF JUSTICE
The "Arab Spring" has especially had repercussions for young people: they face major political and social challenges and, frequently, an uncertain future. What do these young people think about politics? In which areas of society do they make a commitment? And what role does the media play today in social and political change in the region? The FES interviewed young people and young adults from the Middle East and North Africa about these questions. We will be discussing the results produced by the representative survey with the experts Dr. Sonja Hegasy (Leibniz Centre for Modern Oriental Studies) and Prof. Dr. Carola Richter (FU Berlin)...

21-23 June 2018, HAU Hebbel am Ufer, Stresemannstraße 29, 10963 Berlin Claiming Common Spaces. Kunst und urbane Praxis Art and Urban Practice / A project by the Alliance of International Production Houses. With ZMO fellow Nazan Maksudyan and other guests
Cities are our homes, our stages, our works. They provide a rhythm and determine how we move through time and space. As early as 50 years ago, the French sociologist Henri Lefebvre wrote his essay “The Right to the City,” in which he describes a city’s structure, architecture and urban life as a mirror image of its society’s challenges. His vision and critical assessment of the future city, where a “space of consumption” will coincide with a “consumption of space,” have long become our common reality...

Monday, 25 June 2018, 5 pm, ZMO East, West and the Capital: Saudi Arabia through its Visual Arts Lecture by Maha al Senan (Princess Noura Bint Abdulrahman University, Riyadh) as part of the Urban Studies Seminar
The Arabian Peninsula is known to have been a vast nest for numerous settlements, civilizations and unique cities that have formed their own culture. A culture that consists of mixed elements combined from diverse sources. Hence the Eastern region was always part of the Arabian Gulf, shared with Persia and Mesopotamia, yet with a commercial relation with India. While the Western region had its strong connections with the north of Arabia and Egypt for many reasons, the center retained its own culture as a result of geographical isolation...

Im Islam gibt es keinen traditionellen Antisemitismus A guest contribution by ZMO alumnus Peter Wien at Süddeutsche Zeitung
Peter Wien was from 2001 to 2003 research fellow at ZMO. He worked here on his research project on "Discipline and Sacrifice." National Socialism in Iraqi Discourse.

Bettina Dennerlein Religion als Reform. Islāh und Gesellschaft in Marokko, 1830-1912
ZMO Studien, 35, 276 pp.
